Jumpstart My Day

I have a busy day planned. Morning: shuttle Dundas to the groomer for a much-needed coiffe; study for upcoming exam. Afternoon: work on class assignment and presentation.

So, as I lay in bed this morning pondering my day ahead, I realized that such an agenda called for some down-and-dirty rocket fuel to get the old neurons firing. I sipped my usual hot lemon water, and gazed lovingly at my Vitamix: one chocolate raspberry green smoothie to go, please!

Suffice it to say that you would never guess that this decadent, deelishus smoothie could be so utterly good for you. By golly but it is!

I laid the basic foundation: about a cup of water, 1/2 lemon (rind and all), 1 good-sized chunk of fresh gingerroot (peeled), 1 heaping tablespoon of freshly ground flax seed, 3 celery stalks, and 1 whole true cinnamon quill (crumbled). I pulverized this in my trusty VM.

I added a scant tablespoon of raw cacao powder.

Not cocoa but cacao powder. Raw cacao powder is source of body-loving antioxidants and provides ample magnesium and iron. It is ‘raw’ – meaning it has been milled (and heated) at low temperature to preserve and protect nutrients and flavor. It is a healthy alternative to the overly-processed, commonly-used cocoa powder, and a natural alternative to cocoa for baking, hot chocolate, puddings and smoothies. Raw cacao powder provides essential fatty acids, the so-called ‘good’ fats that reduce inflammation and raise good cholesterol/lower bad cholesterol, and it gives a good dose of fiber. A little goes a long way – savour this powder as an occasional I-can’t-believe-this-is-good-for-me treat.

The greens followed: a big bunch of dandelion leaves (a wonderful kidney detox), 3 massive collard leaves, and a couple of large handfuls of baby spinach. These were blended into the mix.

Two cups of frozen raspberries, a cup of frozen mango chunks, and a drop of organic liquid stevia brought this smoothie to a creamy finish. Or start. Whatever. It was so lovely, I had to close my eyes.

Homework, here I come!

(Oh. While it may sound like a woeful Saturday of dull studying, I neglected to mention that I am joining two dear friends for an evening of eats, drinks and a much-needed, laughter-infused, love-filled gabfest.)
