Season’s greetings

November tore into the Vancouver area with a vengeance on Saturday. Cold, wind and driving rain launched us into what is typically a dark, stormy, and desolate month in the Lower Mainland.

Actually, I quite like it.

Cozy sweaters, wooly socks, boots, rosy cheeks, wading through piles of red and orange leaves…autumn is easily my favourite time of the year. And to mark our soggy entrance into November, I spent most of the blustery day working on my paper. My reward at the end of the afternoon? A hot, creamy, spicy drink, sprawled on the sofa, and blanketed by both dog and quilt.

Wait. It gets better.

It was time to watch  my all-time favourite movie. Hallowe’en over, on the cusp of the Christmas season, I knew I had to get my  fix. While I have a long list of Oscar-approved films that I critically admire and enjoy to watch, there is a smattering of little flicks that makes my heart swell. This one takes the cake.

Love Actually.

I could rhapsodize at length about how the skillfully interwoven  sub-stories move seamlessly from one to the next, how Emma Thompson never fails to make me cry when her devastated character  attempts to compose herself in the bedroom,  how Hugh Grant makes me laugh out loud  as Britain’s Prime Minister, dancing through the house to the Pointer Sister’s Jump. Even the sweet porn stars tug at my heart strings.

I. just. outright. adore. this. movie.

And so I watched it. And wept. And laughed through my tears. Knowing at all times what the next scene would bring.

It was the perfect end to a perfectly stormy day.

Yummy Hot Drink  for a Cold, Blustery, Rainy Day

Into a saucepan, pour 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (homemade, all the better!). Add 1 tsp of grated fresh ginger, 1 tsp of ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of ground turmeric, and a dash of cayenne pepper. Bring to a simmer. Pour into your favourite mug and add sweetener to taste (raw honey, stevia). Grab a blanket and start the movie.

Watch this movie EVERY year!! And Bridget Jones, of course :). Any film with Bill NIghy in it is tops!

I couldn’t agree more, Alison! I think he has a new movie that just came out, by the same producers of Love Actually. We’ll have to scope it out!

Gah, after reading this post, it makes me reconsider my dislike of that movie (which I loudly proclaimed in class today!)…so kudos to you Julia, because I know for a fact that film is not to my taste, but your description of your evening in is written so beautifuly it *almost* made me reconsider.
