Well now. Who’d a thunk it?
If you’re not already on the everything-cauliflower-all-the-time bandwagon, I’ve got yet another gem of a recipe to convince you: frozen steamed cauliflower in your smoothie!
Say what?!
It’s pretty simple: adding this ingredient to your favourite smoothie recipe ramps up the creaminess and thickness. And if the-thicker-the-better is your jam, or you enjoy more pudding-like breakfasts in a bowl, you now have a new addition to your morning repertory!
From a nutritional perspective, this beloved brassica will bring dietary fiber, vitamin C, and bountiful B’s to your table. Cauliflower offers a lipid-soluble compound called DIM, which is an immune modulator, antibacterial and anti-viral agent. What a healthy friend!
Back to the culinary side of things. I suggest you do a smidge of preparatory work so that a quick dip into a freezer bag is all that is needed when you get a smoothie urge. Simply cut your cauliflower into bite-sized florets and either pop them in a steamer for 5 minutes, or toss into boiling water for a quick 2-3 minute blanch. Lay flat on a baking sheet and let cool completely. Throw into a freezer bag. Done.
Here is one of my greener veggie smoothie/pud recipes – a personal fave:
Green Glow Detox Pudding
Ingredients
1 cup water
1 small knob of ginger, peeled
1 tbsp flax seed
1 tbsp hemp hearts
1 tbsp Ceylon (true) cinnamon, or 1 tsp Cassia cinnamon
1 tsp reishi powder (optional)
1 tbsp collagen powder/peptides (optional)
1/2 – 1 cup frozen steamed cauliflower
large handful of fresh parsley, with stems
large handful of spinach (or leafy greens of choice)
1/2 avocado
(I like to add stevia in least-processed green powder form for a bit of sweetness)
Preparation
Add all ingredients to blender…whirl until thick and creamy. Green dreams!
