I also love your blog, Julia. My daughter was hoping I could mix her up some of your smoothie recipes and send them of with her to CEGEP for the week. Would they keep in the fridge or must they be drank right away?

Hi Kathy – it is so wonderful to hear from you…talk about a blast from the past! And thank you for the lovely compliment. While its great that your daughter is wanting to try the smoothies (yay!), the biggest thing about these is that you want to eat/drink them fresh as once they’ve been sitting around, the drink will start to oxidize (exposure to oxygen) and the nutrient value will decline quickly. While it is okay to make the evening before, cover tightly and keep in the fridge (to drink in the morning), making these smoothies days in advance rather defeats the purpose. Not only will nutrient value decline, but so will taste. Now, one thing to consider is portioning out the smoothie into tightly-sealed containers and freezing them immediately, then taking out the night before (no sooner), putting in the fridge (still covered) for consumption the following morning. While not ideal, this is do-able.
The other thing I do want to mention is that if you decide to commit to smoothies, I would highly, highly encourage you to get a high-end blender – either a Vitamix (my personal favourite) or a Blendtec. Pricey, but will last many, many years and totally changes the texture and taste of the smoothie, in addition to making extraordinary sauces and soups.
