A mesmerizing read and a hot cuppa

Oh, the written word!

I so so LOVE a good read.

These days, I usually have a captivating bit of fiction on the go (give me a well-written, immerse-me-into-a-fantasy-world novel any day), along with some more meaningful how-can-I-learn-more-about-myself literature to balance things out.

So for the past 36 days (count ’em!), I’ve been completely absorbed in the spectacularly moving and thought-provoking depths of the words of the late, great Dr. Wayne Dyer. Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life is the jewel. Dear friends gifted me this book several years ago, but it was only recently that it all but leapt off the shelf and into my ready, waiting hands.

Sometimes you need to be patient for the right moment.

Such divine timing.

Dr. Dyer provides advice on how to wade through this meaty tome. He suggests savouring its wisdom one chapter/verse per day. The book – in my bare-bonesiest way of explaining – outlines Dr. Dyer’s modern interpretation of the 81 verses of the Tao Te Ching (or Great Way), which was dictated over 2500 years ago by Lao-tzu in ancient China, and regarded by many as “the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence.”

Yup. That’s weighty stuff. But – honestly, reading 2-3 pages (1 chapter/verse) each day is just, well, perfect.

And so now, my early morning routine – as part of my self-care practice – has evolved into a carve-out of quiet time to read my daily verse, and ponder its message and the sage advice and guidance it delivers, through the lens of Dr. Dyer.

And nothing beats, in those early morning hushed hours, with Dundas curled and snoring at my side, a steamy and comforting up-nourished hot elixir, like this gorgeous, creamy swill I enjoyed today:

Nourishing Notes:

Medicinal mushrooms have been used for therapeutic purposes for thousands of years. These powders are made digestible and bio-available through a process called steam extraction (or dual extraction). Through this process of being made into a powder, they are still considered a whole food, and can be added to smoothies, soups, hot elixirs/lattes, or made into hot teas. Harmonic Arts is one company prized for producing additive-free, pure, premium organic mushroom powders.) Three of their mushroom powders that I currently have on hand:

Chaga – helps balance the immune system; it is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral; it soothes mucus membranes (especially throat and intestinal tract). Mineral content includes manganese, copper, potassium, zinc, iron, calcium and selenium.

Reishi -known as a symbol of health and longevity in Traditional Chinese Medicine; contains many bio-active and health-enhancing properties; helps regulate antibody production, lowers blood fat levels, inhibits histamine; assists with insomnia and stress (has a calming effect)

5-Mushroom Blend – has cordyceps (Energy-Adrenal-Oxygen: great for enhancing respiration, increasing blood flow, relaxing bronchial passages), Lion’s Mane (Mind-Memory-Nerve:a nerve tonic helpful with brain function), Turkey Tail (Liver-Immune-Deep Cell Harmony: anti-viral/immune system booster; used in Asia for cancer therapy), chaga (Anti-oxidant-Anti-inflammatory-System Support), reishi (Immune-Spirit-Growth)

Raw cacao powder– known as the ‘food of the gods;’ one of the richest sources of antioxidants found in nature; full of minerals: magnesium, copper, manganese, calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron; provides essential heart-healthy fats and antioxidant-rich flavonoids; helps lower blood pressure and contributes to better circulation; great for mental clarity and a healthy brain (Note: Many of the special properties of cacao are destroyed by cooking, refining, and processing – so go raw!)

Green Power Blend – this is Harmonic Arts’ signature super blend, with detoxifying spirulina and chlorella, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant-rich moringa, enzyme-rich wheat grass, and bone-supporting alfalfa. This is a wonderful superfood powder that I use to upgrade my drinks and other super-powered creations (oatmeal, pancakes, etc.)
